It was another dramatic finish in the round of 16. Two of the top teams battle it out for the right to play in the quarterfinals…and one of them had to lose.
The Swiss had no intention of leaving just yet. They were determined to take Argentina out by any means necessary…even if it meant going to penalty kicks.
…but Argentina had other plans, they weren’t ready to go anywhere either…
It was game one! Bot team kept running at each other in what seemed to by a wide open game… but none could get a clear shot on goal.
It was not until the 119th minute when Leonel Messi picked up a pass on the left side of the field about 30 yards out, caught the Swiss defense napping for a split second, and drove the ball inside the 18 yard box with one of sublime dribbles. He then made a quick pass to dimaria who was unmarked on the right side of the box. Dimaria opened up his hips and with the inside of his left foot, placed the ball neatly into the far right hand corner of the goal.
The Argentinian players and fans went wild in celebration…The Swiss was stunned!
The Swiss should have leveled the score a minute later…when a Swiss player sent a powerful header towards goal only to see it rebound angrily back into play off the right upright. The Argentinian goalkeeper was totally beaten.
….Argentina went on to get the win and will move on to the quarterfinals.
