Becoming a rasta

by Zain
(London)

Q: Hey I'm zain and I'm going to become a Rastafarian but I just have some things to talk about.

My background is Asian, British Pakistani. That is how I'm looked upon but I want to change. I want to change my so called beliefs.

My family are not really muslims or strict on religion so I have the freedom to do what I want spiritual-wise and I have decided to follow rastafari. I believe in it very much and my rasta friend is helping me in the process.

The thing is, I think I can grow dreadlocks but I have a bit of doubt because I dont know what reaction my family members will have and I can't imagine me with it for a long period of time. But I don't want this to stop me in my process.

Now for the herbs I feel I'm comfortable with it but it's just I do come from a family where it is not looked upon so I can do it but a part of me has doubt.

Those are the only things. I really want to be a part of this culture and live the way of life because it is the only one that really makes sense to me.
Thanks.

A: Hi Zain. Welcome to the site. I hear and feel your dilemna. The best I can tell you is follow your heart...and take your time.

Start with what you are comfortable with and add others as you go along.

Remember that becoming a Rasta is a process that takes time. As you go along, you drop off your old principles and put on the "new" Rastafarian principles. For some this happens quickly for other it takes time.

So whichever path you take, know that it is the end that matters. You will eventually become whichever principles you adopt. Many may not like it, but that's okay.

So, do what you are comfortable with and whatever you are not comfortable with now, you can leave out...and add later.

One Love.
