Belgium Survived Late Onslaught To Beat The USA 2-1 In Overtime

Belgium survived late USA onslaught to beat them 2-1 in overtime…in another dramatic second round finish.

Tim Howard made a record total of 15 saves to keep the USA in the game for the entire first 90 minutes as it ended 0-0.

Overtime Highlights

It took until overtime for the Belgian team to break down the USA defense. Late sub Lukaku showed a glimpse of why he could be one of the best strikers in the world if he was more consistent.

As soon as he came on he kept running at the USA and his strength and skillful ball handling skills was evident. In very first few minutes of the first half of overtime, he pick up a long pass and dribble towards the edge of he 18, made a nice pass to an onrushing supporting player who made a quick move to create space for himself and drove it past Howard.

Minutes later Lukaku would pick up another pass on the left side of the field, controlled it with his first touch and drove a powerful shot pass Howard into the roof of the net.

With time running out, it seems all over for the USA, until Klinsmann made the unexpected substitution…19 year old Julian Green who had not played a single minute all tournament.

He came on and with a few minutes received a chip pass over the top, ran on to it an finished it on the volley in right hand corner of the net.

Minutes later, the USA should have leveled, but Dempsey took one touch too many and botch the perfect opportunity off a well designed free kick.

Time eventually ran out on the USA as Belgium won 2-1

It was a great run from the USA team, they totally surprised everyone with this run.
