How Does Religion Influences The Jamaican Society?
Q:How does religion influences Jamaica's cultural norms, values, attitude, dress, lifestyle?
A: Religion has a big time influence. People behave, eat, drink, and act according to what they believe on the island.
What they believe is their religion!
Some believe in God, some don't. Some believe in the Christian God, some believe in the Muslim god, some believe in the Rastafarian god, other believe in a god (some supreme being).
...But regardless of what they believe, their lifestyle follows...
Our Island was built upon Christian principles...and it is still ingrained in the society. This is a society which believes in The Christian God. We still pray in schools, teach our children to pray, worship on Sunday, have our traditional rice and peas and chicken after Sunday service, look forward to the day as one of relaxation with the family. I grew up doing the same.
We still use the principles from the bible to raise our children. We teach them to love one another, respect our elders, say thank you and please, treat others the way they want to be treated, and so on and so forth.
Of course a lot of this kind of teaching is slowly changing...as other religious influences pop up.
On a whole though, the general attitude is that when things go wrong, God will help. Which God? The god that that particular individual believes in.
Most Christian dress modestly, especially when going to church...and on a daily basis as well...of course it varies from individual to individual
Other religions such as Muslim, Rastafarian(if you want to call it a religion) dress according to their beliefs. For example the Rastafarians dress with the color red, yellow and green...and they eat only
certain foods. We know about the Muslims around the world their lifestyle and worship is pretty much the same.
Let me see...who else do we have? I can't really think of any other. Like I said, Christianity dominates as far as I can remember. So, I guess you can call Jamaica a Christian culture.
