Jamaica Defeated El Salvador And Top Group in Gold Cup 2015

It was not pretty but it’s a win nonetheless. The boyz proved tonight that their 2-2 draw with Costa Rica, 1-0 win over Canada, and the close 0-1 losses to top  Copa America teams against Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay was no fluke. They have taken the momentum into the Gold cup and is playing with a lot of confidence at the moment.

Today the top their group with 7 points from 2 wins and a draw. Now they will play Haiti in the quarter finals for a place in the semis.

Playing most of the game without their number one stopper Dwayne Miller, the boyz held on to defeat El Salvador 1-0 tonight. Miller was stretchered off after receiving what seemed to be a knee to the head during a challenge for the ball by Pablo Punyed in the 23rd minute. He was down for quite a few minutes…hopefully he did not receive a concussion.

Ryan Thompson, stepped in as the back up goalie and did an awesome job against the El Salvador attack.

Jamaica’s goal came late in the 73rd minute when Mattocks received a pass down the right flank, cut back inside and send a pass to McAnuff who blasted a shot  on go which the goalkeeper had difficulty handling. McCleary was right on hand to puck up the rebound and finish nicely to give the reggae boyz the lead.

Overall, Jamaica did not play it normal possession style game and for the most part allowed El Salvador to control the game… probably because they were falling to the ground quite easily from the slightest challenge. With this in mind, the Boyz were careful not do initiate contact inside the box for fear of giving away a penalty. The referee seemed to be blowing the whistle for just about every fall.

In the end he handed out quite a few yellow cards to both teams including two to the Jamaican striker Darren Mattocks. Mattocks picked up his second yellow card for what seemed to be a fair challenge in the 84th minute. He will miss the next game against .

El Salvador worked hard trying to equal the scored in the final few minutes, but the Reggae Boyz were equal to the task.

They will now go on to play in the quarter final knock out round with hopes of making it to the semifinals. Great Job boyz!
